Born in Milan in 1964, Formigli began his career as a print journalist, writing for various newspapers and magazines. In the early 1990s, he transitioned to television, working as a correspondent for Rai, Italy's public broadcasting network.

It was during his time at Rai that Formigli made his mark as a war reporter. In 2014, he traveled to Syria, becoming the first Italian journalist to enter Raqqa, the then-capital of the Islamic State. His reporting from the war-torn city provided viewers with an unflinching look at the horrors of war and the human cost of conflict.
