Bowman Faces Steep Challenge in New York Primary

As Moderate County Executive Enters Race

June 24, 2024 | Updated 11:35 AM

When Representative Jamaal Bowman of New York won a Democratic primary in 2020 as an untested middle school principal, it was seen as an upset that sent shockwaves through the party establishment. Now, just two years later, Bowman faces a tough challenge from a moderate White county executive, George Latimer, in the upcoming June 25 primary.

This time last year, Bowman seemed finally to be hitting his stride. He had won a seat on the powerful House Judiciary Committee and was a vocal advocate for progressive causes like Medicare for All and the Green New Deal.

But Bowman's tenure in Congress has also been marked by controversy. He has been criticized for his support of the "defund the police" movement and for his comments on Israel.

Latimer, on the other hand, is a more traditional Democrat. He has served as Westchester County Executive since 2018 and has a reputation as a moderate and pragmatic leader.
