Fatah Official Killed in Israeli Strike

On August 21, 2023, an Israeli strike in the southern Lebanese city of Sidon killed a senior member of the Palestinian movement, Fatah, according to a statement from the Israeli military.

The strike targeted a building in Sidon where the Fatah official, identified as Maher Younes, was allegedly meeting with other members of the group, the statement said.

Younes was a senior member of Fatah's military wing, the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, and was considered a close associate of Fatah leader Mahmoud Abbas.

The cease-fire was declared on August 22, 2023, after a meeting between Lebanese army commander General Joseph Aoun, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, and Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati.

The meeting was held to discuss the recent clashes between Fatah and Islamist militants in the Ein el-Hilweh refugee camp in Sidon, which left at least five people dead and dozens injured.
